French is not only one of the official languages of Canada: it is also one of the world’s major international languages. The Department offers students an integrated curriculum, which brings together courses in language, linguistics, literature, and French culture. The content of our undergraduate curriculum is appropriately sequenced and progressively organized. The department’s comprehensive approach reflects an understanding of our prospective students’ knowledge and abilities, interests and motivations. The FSL courses focus on language study and cultural competence whereas the FRE courses require a higher level of competence in French, and are designed for students who want to pursue the study of Linguistics and Literature. Unless specified otherwise, the language of instruction of all courses is French.
Our French programs and courses provide a varied, flexible, and in-depth examination of the French language and the French and Francophone cultures. In the Canadian job market, command of the French language is a definite asset. The skills and knowledge acquired will lay the groundwork for careers in teaching, journalism, translation, publishing, and government service as well as research in a variety of fields.
