The French Department seeks 1 Teaching Assistant for the following course:

JFL388H1S- Bilingualism, Multilingualism, and Second Language Acquisition

Using and encountering multiple languages is the everyday norm of people living in much of theÌý
world, including in multicultural cities like 51³ÉÈ˸£ÀûÍø. This course offers a broad exploration ofÌý
the cognitive and social underpinnings of the dynamic field of bilingualism, multilingualism, andÌý
second language acquisition. We will (i) explore the differences between bilinguals/multilingualsÌý
and monolinguals in the ways they process and use language; (ii) examine the language acquisitionÌý
patterns of children and adults; (iii) investigate the interactions between an individual’sÌý
language repertoires and those of their peers and local community.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral student in French linguistics or a related field. University-level teaching experience.Ìý
(Native-)like fluency in spoken and written French and English. Expert-level understanding ofÌý
linguistic theory as related to bilingualism and second language acquisition.

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of the use of Quercus, specifically test manager and communication tools.

Relevant Criterion

Past teaching experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience inÌý
respect of this posted position.

Duties

Preparation, contact hours, marking, conducting tutorials, meeting with course instructor.

Duties of this position shall be performed at the campus on which the position is located. WhereÌý
the duties are intended to be performed at another location, such other location will be specifiedÌý
in the posting.

Final availability of the position(s) is contingent upon enrolment, budgetary consideration and the
determination of appointments as governed by the collective agreement.

Rate of Pay:

SGS II - $52.97/hour (+ vacation pay)
